Saving Money Through Generic Medications

Pharmacists are often asked questions about prescription medication, such as possible side effects, dosage instructions and potential interactions. But as health care costs continue to rise, another common question is how to save money on medications.

Often, the best way to save money on a medication is to switch to a generic drug. Generics are often sold at a fraction of the cost of their brand name counterparts.

“Using a generic equivalent is the best and safest option for saving money on medications,” said Lindsey Stephens, pharmacist and director of professional services for Medicine Shoppe International, Inc. “Even if a generic equivalent isn’t available, your pharmacist can recommend a similar generic drug in the same therapeutic class as the prescribed drug, and work with your physician to make the change.”

The price difference between generic and brand name drugs often causes customers to question generics’ effectiveness. In reality, a generic drug is just as safe and effective as its brand name counterpart. To help eliminate confusion around generics, Medicine Shoppe Pharmacists are providing answers to common questions:

What is the difference between brand name drugs and their generic alternatives?

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations require that prescription and OTC generic drugs have the same active ingredients, strength and dosage form -pill, liquid or injection-as the brand name equivalent, making them equally effective. Brand name and generic drugs do differ in the fillers or additives used, which are inactive ingredients.

Why are generic drugs less expensive?

Generic drugs are less expensive because their manufacturers do not incur costs for initial research or marketing that brand name drugs incur and pass along to the consumer.

Is it safe to switch from a brand name to a generic drug?

Yes. Because generic and brand name drugs have the same makeup, it is safe to switch to a generic.

How do I find out about available generics?

Your pharmacist is a valuable resource for information regarding generic drugs, especially if you are unsure of what generic alternatives are available or have concerns about switching. Even if your doctor prescribes a brand name drug, your pharmacist can advise you of available generic alternatives and work with your doctor to make the switch.

Saving Money over the Christmas Period

Word Count:Article Body:
Christmas is one of the busiest times of year. There are so many things to think of. People have usually got family or friends visiting, the Christmas meal to cook, gifts to buy and wrap and decorations to put up. It can also be a very expensive time of year. Many people report huge regrets every January when they have over spent on Christmas presents and all the related costs.

If you are worried about finances this Christmas, or want to cut down a little on expenses there are a few simple money saving tips you can take.

Secret Santa

First of all there are gifts. Depending on the size of your family you may spend a lot of money on gifts over the Christmas period. One of the things you might consider doing is arranging a secret Santa. These are a great way to cut down on gift costs and can also be a lot of fun. How it works is you get a group of friends or family members together and put everyones name in a hat. Then you each pick a name from the hat at random. This is the person you buy a present for. The game guarantees that everyone gets a present while at the same time meaning that you only have to buy one present. You can keep the gifts anonymous or not depending on your preference.

Another thing you can look at doing this Christmas if you want to save some money is consider making gifts. You can bake cookies or cakes, or make gifts using some craft you are good at or enjoy such as knitting, cross-stitching or patch working. You can also make your own Christmas cards. This can be fun and many people will appreciate the personal touch.

Debt Consolidation

Christmas shouldnt be all about saving money, but it shouldnt be about falling into debt either. It is generous to give but no one expects you to give more than you can afford. If you are having trouble with debts then you shouldnt be over spending this Christmas. There are many things you can do to get debts back under control. One option would be debt consolidation. This means taking out a loan to pay off all your existing debts. The interest rates will be far lower than those on other debts such as credit cards and the savings will give you the chance you need to get your finances back under control.

Sustainable Architecture Helps Texas Instruments Save Money

Conserving energy is on the minds of most Americans today. With gas prices skyrocketing, everybody is looking for ways to save energy, which translates into saving money.

If it takes $500 to heat your home in the winter, imagine how much it costs to heat a huge factory. Obviously any company building a factory needs to be as frugal as possible. Now, you can learn from their innovations.

In a heartening move against resource guzzling habits of big industry, Texas Instruments recently built a “green” factory in a town near Dallas, Texas. The company had been tempted to build the plant overseas to cut costs, but instead got creative and redesigned the factory’s blueprints to save money. It was a huge challenge and seemingly impossible feat for the design team, but it got done.

“We have to [approach energy consumption differently]…I think you do first have to set an impossible goal. Amazing things happen when people claim responsibility for the impossible,” said Shaunna Sowell, the company’s vice-president who oversees facilities world-wide.

Many changes were instrumented in building the new factory. Whereas the old factories were three stories, the new factory was redesigned to fit into two stories. More attention was paid to how the factory consumes its resources and short-cuts were adopted. Attention was also paid to the waste coming out of the factory, and now most of it is recycled. Passive solar construction techniques were used so the factory could become more self-sufficient.

“Green building is not necessarily about producing your own power with windmills and solar panels. It’s about addressing the consumption side with really creative design and engineering to eliminate waste and reduce energy usage–it’s the next industrial revolution,” said Paul Westbrook, who aided Texas Instruments in building their new factory and has a solar-powered home himself.

Texas Instruments expects to save big on energy costs for the life of their new building. Month in and month out, their bills will be low because they designed their building with energy conservation in mind.

Saving Money On Your Home Improvement Project:

If you have started a home improvement project recently, you understand that the process of redoing your residence can be a very expensive proposition. As a result, you likely are looking for ways through which you can save some money on the overall costs of your particular project. To this end, you would be well served if you could trim expenses associated with the purchase of those tools that you do need for your particular home improvement project.

One method that you might want to utilize for trimming the cost associated with the tools you need for your home improvement project is to purchase refurbished tools for your home improvement endeavor. You may be wondering what, exactly, are refurbished tools. In simple terms, refurbished tools are those that have had a previous owner. Once that owner has finished with one or another of these refurbished tools, they are sold to a business that specializes in refurbishing — tuning up and remodeling, if you will — previously used home improvement tools and pieces of equipment. Thus, these tools end up in better shape than they were in when the original owner parted with the items.

There are some definite benefits to buying and using refurbished tools. First and foremost, these items tend to be significantly cheaper than similar items purchased new. Indeed, you can save a significant amount of money by purchasing refurbished rather than new tools for your particular home improvement project.

In addition to being less expensive than new products, refurbished tools normally are in very decent shape and condition. While not new per se, these tools tend to be as close to new as is possible when it comes to previously owned and utilized products.

If you are interested in finding and buying refurbished tools for your own home improvement project, the Internet is a solid starting point for your search. By surfing around the Net, you should be able to find a decent selection of different opportunities through which you can make the purchase of refurbished tools.

There are also a wide array of different stores in the brick and mortar world that feature refurbished tools within their inventories. In short, there are many options available to you when it comes to resources for refurbished tools.

Saving Money on Your Grocery Bills

How is your grocery bill month to month? Do you end up spending more than you wanted every month? If you are at all like me, a working wife and mother, grocery shopping and meal time can be a stressful and time consuming endeavor. And, if getting the meal on the table for a descent price is not enough, there is the health issue that factors in. Attempting to provide healthy meals that will not empty the pocketbook can be difficult to find! With some great tips, you will see the benefits you receive when you start shopping smart and eating at home. It is worth it!

The following are easy ideas to help you save money when you go to the grocery store and when you are at home cooking.

Be creative
If you forgot or forget something at the store think about what else you might be able to use. For example, I have forgotten to grab butter (a staple item) and potato soup was on the menu for the night. I substituted olive oil for butter that night and it worked great!

Use leftovers
For example, if you have stuff left over from week one, use it the next. Use up all salad stuff and things that can go bad, even if you have to create a new meal that is not on your meal plan. Wasted food = wasted money.

Be a smart shopper!
I think that often people are not prepared when they do go grocery shopping and end up spending more money than they intended to on food that is not healthy for them. Remember the stuff from the meal plan information (below)!

First, do the preparation work at home. Look at the local ads before you go. Make meal plans according to the ads from that week.

Second, be flexible! Recently, while at a grocery store, I saw a special on good quality split chicken breast. They were $1.48/lb. which was a savings of $1.41/lb. off what they normally cost. When I saw them, I had never bought split chicken breast and was not sure of the differences when comparing them to regular chicken breast. So, I asked the guy behind the meat counter. He explained that there was a small bone in the back of the meat that could easily be cut or picked out. I was sold! After cooking the meat to make the meals, I think I actually like this cheaper meat better! It was juicier than my normally boiled chicken breasts come out.

Third, do not go to the shops hungry! Why does it seem that you rush off to the grocery store and once there, while shopping for food, you suddenly realize that you are very hungry? This almost guarantees that you will spend money on food that you do not need and is most likely not healthy for you.

Be prepared
When you leave to go shopping, pick a time where you do not feel rushed. This will better help you to stick to your list and to eating better foods!

Have staples on hand
Here is a list of things to have on hand for cooking and baking. These are the items I have found most helpful. Look through the list and decide what items your family uses, then add and subtract items as it makes sense for you and your family.

Honey
White Flour
Wheat Flour
Cornmeal
Quick Oats
Shortening or Lard
Oil (olive or grape seed are best)
Potatoes
Yeast
Frozen Vegetables (whatever is cheap and your family likes)
Mustard
White Sugar
Brown Sugar
Vanilla
Herbs/spices (like garlic, cumin, ginger, parsley, oregano, etc.)
Bouillon Cubes (Chicken)
Bread Crumbs
Soy Sauce
Worcester Sauce
Butter (tub)
Sticks of Butter
Cornstarch

Start meal planning!
What is a meal plan, you might be thinking. A meal plan is exactly that, putting together a plan for your meals. Decide what you are going to eat and putting it in to practice. There are many reasons to have a meal plan. Here are a few of those reasons and why they are important.

Save money through a meal plan! Make a meal plan according to ingredients. Put recipes and meals together so that ingredients are not wasted because they are not needed and are, therefore, unused.

Save time through having a plan and shopping lists – When you go to the grocery store, you will have a list to go from and will not by unneeded or overpriced items.

Spend more time together as a family – With a meal plan, you will consequently eat more at home. Dinnertime is a great opportunity to talk and spend time together. Take advantage of this!

Save energy – With a meal plan you will make fewer trips to the grocery store. A meal plan enables you to stop thinking about what you will make for dinner that night, what ingredients you still need for it, and how to put it together. A meal plan helps you to be organized!

Eat healthier – You will not be going out as much with a meal plan ready for you, this will help you eat healthier foods at home! You will eat a better variety of foods since you have thought about it ahead of time. You can plan for healthier meals and start to understand what is going into your body. Thinking through the food you eat will automatically make you more aware and hopefully help you make wise decisions!

Saving Money On Your Food Bill

The money you spend on groceries is an area of your home budget that you can really save some money on. In our situation we are a family of four and our budget is $125.00 per week. I would not say we are pinching pennies, and by no means are we being extravagant. We also live in the Pacific Northwest. Prices do vary somewhat according to where you live.

There are many of you out there spending twice this amount. Even in our situation which many of you may find on the average or low side we could easily tighten our belts and lower this bill by 30%. Yes, 30%

For the amount we spend, a 30% savings amounts to $1950.00 a year. If you are spending twice the amount we are, that 30% savings can amount to a budget savings of almost $4000.00 a year. That is a nice chunk of change for that big screen TV, or to pay down your debt, or whatever other means you want to use it for.

Before we get into some details I want to add that a key element to managing and reducing any aspect of your budget is having the right attitude. Also, you need to have some discipline and be able to stick to your guns. Set goals that are attainable.

Six quick tips to save money on your food budget

* Buy the store brand.
* Buy fruits and vegetables that are on sale.
* Read the flyers that in the newspaper, clip coupons.
* Shop more than one store.
* Buy less prepared foods.
* Go to the store after you have eaten.
* Avoid impulse buying on quick trips.
* Buy the store brand

Some folks are brand loyal. But, buying brand names can cost you a lot more money. The reality is that in a blind taste test most of us could not tell the difference between the store brand and the name brand. In some cases the only difference between the name brand and the store brand is the label they put on the can.

Read the flyers

In reading the Supermarket flyers there is one general theme I have noticed. Between two or three stores there are typically enough items on sale to make some substantial savings. It is typical that most of us do a “big shop” a week and then do 2-5 quick runs to the store during the week. Change this pattern. Instead, spend 10-15 minutes a week reading the flyers and planning your list to shop 2-3 stores. Most grocery stores are in the same general vicinity. Sure you might be adding about an hour to your shopping a week, but if that hour is worth saving a few thousand dollars on your food budget then it is well worth it!

Buying fresh fruits and vegetables on sale

We just spent .88 cents a pound for Fuji apples. They normally are $1.49 a pound. That’s a pretty good savings. We just love Fuji’s. We like a lot of other fruits and vegetables as well. My point here is that there is always going to be some fruits or vegetables that you like that are on sale. Buy what is on sale and you will save money.

Shop more than one store

Do this in conjunction with shopping the weekly flyers. Whether you do one big weekly shop at three stores or some other plan that works for you, a sure fire way to save money is to shop more than one store.

Buy less prepared foods

Most people buy prepared foods because they are convenient. They are also a lot more expensive. A bag of noodles, and a few cans of store brand cream of mushroom or chicken soup is a lot cheaper and goes a lot farther than a box of Hamburger Helper. And, it really does not take any more time to cook up you meal using the ingredients I named.

Shop on a full stomach

Nothing more really needs to be said about this.

So how do I pull all this off?

- Set a plan and stick to it

- Get the food money in cash for the week and put it in an envelope. This is your budget. When the money runs out you are done.

- Never (ever) go to the store without a list. Stick to the list!

- Treat yourself to an inpulse buy once or twice a month. Hold out money in your budget just for this. You will have something to look forward to.

Even with all of this good information some of you may be looking for a plan that is a bit more structured and disciplined. My spouse subscribes to a service called the “Grocery Game” (http://www.thegrocerygame.com/) which is essentially a formalized approach to everything I have discussed. Click here for their website. It will cost you a few bucks to join, but is well worth it as they provide you with information on sales that you will not find in the flyers. Note: this service is not available in every area.

Happy shopping!
