“We have to [approach energy consumption differently]…I think you do first have to set an impossible goal. Amazing things happen when people claim responsibility for the impossible,” said Shaunna Sowell, the company’s vice-president who oversees facilities world-wide.

Many changes were instrumented in building the new factory. Whereas the old factories were three stories, the new factory was redesigned to fit into two stories. More attention was paid to how the factory consumes its resources and short-cuts were adopted. Attention was also paid to the waste coming out of the factory, and now most of it is recycled. Passive solar construction techniques were used so the factory could become more self-sufficient.

“Green building is not necessarily about producing your own power with windmills and solar panels. It’s about addressing the consumption side with really creative design and engineering to eliminate waste and reduce energy usage–it’s the next industrial revolution,” said Paul Westbrook, who aided Texas Instruments in building their new factory and has a solar-powered home himself.

Texas Instruments expects to save big on energy costs for the life of their new building. Month in and month out, their bills will be low because they designed their building with energy conservation in mind.

Be creative
If you forgot or forget something at the store think about what else you might be able to use. For example, I have forgotten to grab butter (a staple item) and potato soup was on the menu for the night. I substituted olive oil for butter that night and it worked great!

Use leftovers
For example, if you have stuff left over from week one, use it the next. Use up all salad stuff and things that can go bad, even if you have to create a new meal that is not on your meal plan. Wasted food = wasted money.

Be a smart shopper!
I think that often people are not prepared when they do go grocery shopping and end up spending more money than they intended to on food that is not healthy for them. Remember the stuff from the meal plan information (below)!

First, do the preparation work at home. Look at the local ads before you go. Make meal plans according to the ads from that week.

Second, be flexible! Recently, while at a grocery store, I saw a special on good quality split chicken breast. They were $1.48/lb. which was a savings of $1.41/lb. off what they normally cost. When I saw them, I had never bought split chicken breast and was not sure of the differences when comparing them to regular chicken breast. So, I asked the guy behind the meat counter. He explained that there was a small bone in the back of the meat that could easily be cut or picked out. I was sold! After cooking the meat to make the meals, I think I actually like this cheaper meat better! It was juicier than my normally boiled chicken breasts come out.

Third, do not go to the shops hungry! Why does it seem that you rush off to the grocery store and once there, while shopping for food, you suddenly realize that you are very hungry? This almost guarantees that you will spend money on food that you do not need and is most likely not healthy for you.

Be prepared
When you leave to go shopping, pick a time where you do not feel rushed. This will better help you to stick to your list and to eating better foods!

Have staples on hand
Here is a list of things to have on hand for cooking and baking. These are the items I have found most helpful. Look through the list and decide what items your family uses, then add and subtract items as it makes sense for you and your family.

Oil (olive or grape seed are best)

Frozen Vegetables (whatever is cheap and your family likes)

What is a meal plan, you might be thinking. A meal plan is exactly that, putting together a plan for your meals. Decide what you are going to eat and putting it in to practice. There are many reasons to have a meal plan. Here are a few of those reasons and why they are important.

Save money through a meal plan! Make a meal plan according to ingredients. Put recipes and meals together so that ingredients are not wasted because they are not needed and are, therefore, unused.

Save time through having a plan and shopping lists – When you go to the grocery store, you will have a list to go from and will not by unneeded or overpriced items.

Spend more time together as a family – With a meal plan, you will consequently eat more at home. Dinnertime is a great opportunity to talk and spend time together. Take advantage of this!

Save energy – With a meal plan you will make fewer trips to the grocery store. A meal plan enables you to stop thinking about what you will make for dinner that night, what ingredients you still need for it, and how to put it together. A meal plan helps you to be organized!

I would not say we are pinching pennies, and by no means are we being extravagant. We also live in the Pacific Northwest. Prices do vary somewhat according to where you live.

There are many of you out there spending twice this amount. Even in our situation which many of you may find on the average or low side we could easily tighten our belts and lower this bill by 30%. Yes, 30%

For the amount we spend, a 30% savings amounts to $1950.00 a year. If you are spending twice the amount we are, that 30% savings can amount to a budget savings of almost $4000.00 a year. That is a nice chunk of change for that big screen TV, or to pay down your debt, or whatever other means you want to use it for.

Before we get into some details I want to add that a key element to managing and reducing any aspect of your budget is having the right attitude. Also, you need to have some discipline and be able to stick to your guns. Set goals that are attainable.

Six quick tips to save money on your food budget

* Buy the store brand.
* Buy fruits and vegetables that are on sale.
* Read the flyers that in the newspaper, clip coupons.
* Shop more than one store.
* Buy less prepared foods.
* Go to the store after you have eaten.
* Avoid impulse buying on quick trips.
* Buy the store brand

Some folks are brand loyal. But, buying brand names can cost you a lot more money. The reality is that in a blind taste test most of us could not tell the difference between the store brand and the name brand. In some cases the only difference between the name brand and the store brand is the label they put on the can.

Read the flyers

In reading the Supermarket flyers there is one general theme I have noticed. Between two or three stores there are typically enough items on sale to make some substantial savings. It is typical that most of us do a “big shop” a week and then do 2-5 quick runs to the store during the week. Change this pattern. Instead, spend 10-15 minutes a week reading the flyers and planning your list to shop 2-3 stores. Most grocery stores are in the same general vicinity. Sure you might be adding about an hour to your shopping a week, but if that hour is worth saving a few thousand dollars on your food budget then it is well worth it!

Buying fresh fruits and vegetables on sale

We just spent .88 cents a pound for Fuji apples. They normally are $1.49 a pound. That’s a pretty good savings. We just love Fuji’s. We like a lot of other fruits and vegetables as well. My point here is that there is always going to be some fruits or vegetables that you like that are on sale. Buy what is on sale and you will save money.

Shop more than one store

Do this in conjunction with shopping the weekly flyers. Whether you do one big weekly shop at three stores or some other plan that works for you, a sure fire way to save money is to shop more than one store.

Buy less prepared foods

Most people buy prepared foods because they are convenient. They are also a lot more expensive. A bag of noodles, and a few cans of store brand cream of mushroom or chicken soup is a lot cheaper and goes a lot farther than a box of Hamburger Helper. And, it really does not take any more time to cook up you meal using the ingredients I named.

Shop on a full stomach

Nothing more really needs to be said about this.

So how do I pull all this off?

- Set a plan and stick to it

- Get the food money in cash for the week and put it in an envelope. This is your budget. When the money runs out you are done.

- Never (ever) go to the store without a list. Stick to the list!

- Treat yourself to an inpulse buy once or twice a month. Hold out money in your budget just for this. You will have something to look forward to.
